  Notes	A Miscarriage of Justice.In the Assembly on June 7 Mr. "Waddell moved that a select committee be appointed, with power to Bend for persons and papers, to inquire into and report upon the case of John Deniff, who was convicted on February 4 last, at Dubbo, on a charge of stealing a sum of money from ono Christie Cunningham, and was sentenced to two yearBs imprisonment, but waB subsequently re leased after a magisterial inquiry. He explained the circumstances of the case, and said there was a strong feeling in the district that a miscarriage' of justice had taken place, and a number of gentlemen had come to Sydney to ask him to have the matter opened up. Mrs. Deniff, who was a delicate woman, died after her husband's conviction, medical evidence show ing that the shock had caused her death. Deniff's business had abo been ruined, and he lost large sums of money in defending the case. Mr. Suttor admitted the hardship of the case; but it had been shown that the conviction of Deniff was due to the inability of his solicitor. It was no part of the Government's duty to pay recompense in auch cases; but as this was an exceptional one, he did not think the Government would resist any pro- posal of compensation that the House might make.
