Mrs Mary Ann South sued Mrs Sophia Sly for
£5 is 3d, being proportionate cost of dividing fence
between their respective properties at Richmond
Bottoms
Mr E Campbell appeared for plaintiff, and Mr
R B Walker tor defendant
Evidence was given on behalf of the plaintiff by
herself and James Richardson, who erected the
fence, that notice was given to Mrs Sly to fence in
accordance with the Dividing Fences Act, and
that she had only erected 19 rods instead of 27 1/2
as required by her.
The defence consisted in the fact that Mrs Sly
had previously erected 17 rods of fencing on the
same line, some years ago at her own expense, and
that that fence was still there, and together with
the 14 rods lately erected by her, made up her
half of the dividing line.
Evidence was given in support of this by Mrs
Bailey, Mr Henry Sly, and Mr J Shepherd, who
erected the old fencing.
The Bench would not take into consideration
anything regarding the old fence and gave a ver
dict for plaintiff. [12] - Numerous expressions of sympathy have been received by the
relatives of the late Mrs. Sophia
Sly, in the loss they have sustained
by the demise of that lady. [13] - C. S. QUEST

Obituary.
One of the oldest and most respected, and
also one of the best known residents of
Richmond, in the person of Mrs. Sophia
Sly, of March street passed away to that
bourne, from whence no traveller returns
on Friday morning last, at the age of 75
years. The deceased was a native of
Richmond. She had been ailing for a long
time prior to her death. Many years
ago she kept the Black Horse Hotel, now
occupied by her son William, and one
thing that characterised her long life was
her liberality and kind heartedness. She
leaves a number of sons and daughters,
and a larger number of grand and great-
grand children. The children who sur-
vive her are : Messrs. William, Walter,
Charles, John and Harry Sly, Mrs. Bailey
(Richmond), James Sly, and Mrs. C Mills
(Strathfield). The funeral took place on
Saturday afternoon last. Leaving the
house at 2 p.m., the coffin was carried by
a number of friends to St. Peter's Church
of England Cemetery. The Rev. J.
Howell Price and Rev. Dr. Cameron
conducted the funeral service, both clergy
men making reference to the life of the
deceased. The coffin which was of pol-
ished cedar, mounted with silver, and was
covered with beautiful wreaths. The
funeral arrangements were carried out by
Mr. Arthur Price. - [S123] Windsor and Richmond Gazette (NSW : 1888 - 1921), Saturday 5 August 1899.
