Exceedingly sudden and painful too, was the
shock received by Mr and Mrs William Biddle
and family on Sunday, when news was brought of
the death, by drowning in the Hawkesbury River
under the Terrace, of their bright and promising
son Edwin. He had been employed for some 18
months on the farm by his uncle, Mr Henry
Powell. He was a general favorite, and on Sun
day morning breakfasted with his parents in
Lennox-street, Richmond, left them to return to
Mr Powell's, and in the space of two or three
hours after, was called upon to " make that jour
ney from which no traveller returneth." Along
with several others he made up his mind to pro
ceed to the river for a bathe. He could swim, but
not expertly, and seemingly, was induced to go
into very deep water, believing those present
could pilot him safely back to landing. The body
was recovered from the water during the after
noon, and conveyed to the residence of his parents,
to await the holding of an inquest and interment
A.t the inquest a verdict of accidental drowning
was recorded. The funeral was very largely at
tended ; about fifty boys from the Public-scheol
marched in front of the hearse, and carried floral
tributes, and the large concourse of persons who
also assembled to pay the last tribute of respect
showed with what esteem the youth himself and his
parents were held. The interment of the body was
the occasion of a very touching address by the
Rev J Howell Price. Mr and Mrs Biddle and
family have the keenest sympathy of the whole
neighbourhood, and we trust they will in some
      measure find consolation therefrom.
