Mr. Colin Huxley
With the death recently of
Mr. Colin Stanley Huxley, the
Warwick district lost one of
its most prominent citizens
over many years.
The., late Mr. Huxleyfwas
born at Richmond (N.S.W.)
in 1879 and educated at the
Richmond! school f and
Hawkesbury Agricultural Col-
lege. He arrived in Warwick
in 1899, and decided to stay
here although his original in-
tention had been to go north.
One of the first business men
he met in Warwick was the
late Mr. James De Conlay,
who offered him a position.
After being with the firm for
several years he was appoint-
ed manager of the grocery,
ironmongery and produce de-
partments in succession to
the late Mr., Dingwall, who
had fcommenced in business
on his own account.
Several years after his mar
riage to a daughter of the late.
Thomas Hall, author .of the
book on Warwick's early his-
tory, Mr. Huxley, commenced
ln business on; his own ac-
count and was doing remark-
ably well when he had the
misfortune to be burnt out. He
then, moved to Mt. Sturt
where he combined produce
buying with farming pursuits,
having purchased a property
at Loch Lomond In later
years he retired and1 took-up
residence in Warwick.
For many years he was
closely associated with the
Queensland State Wheat
Board, the Eastern Downs. H.
and A. Association as a com-
mitteeman, and the Warwick,
Caledonian Society of which
he was a life- member - his
mother was born in Inverness
(Scotland). He was also, a life
member of the ambulance
brigade. He was local organ-
iser of the West Moreton and
Darling Downs exhibit at the
Sydney Show for a number of
years and also judged, the
produce and vegetable sec
tions at a number of Downs
shows. An expert in trotting
events, he acted as handicap-
per for a wide circuit of
Downs shows.
Mr. Huxley took an active
interest in most sports and
was a member of the Warwick
Bowling Club for years.
His grandfather, the late
Thomas Huxley, eminent
British scientist and general
biologist of note in the 19th
century, was 23-year-old as-
sistant surgeon on the sur-
veying ship H.M.S. Rattle-
snake which left Sydney on
April 29, 1848 to survey the
inner passage between the
Great Barrier Reef and the
mainland. Thomas Huxley
was awarded a Fellowship of
the Royal Society at the early,
age of 25, and the society's
Royal Medal at the almost
unprecedented age of. 27. The
late Mr. Colin Huxiey was also
a second cousin of Professor;
Julian Huxley.
Deceased leaves a widow,
two sons (Mr. C. B. Huxley,
Warwick), Mr. T. A. Huxley,
New Guinea) and one
daughter (Mrs. G. Cham-
pion, Sydney).

THE death occurred in Sydney on January 22 of Lorna Margaret Jane Champion (nee Huxley), widow of the late Dr Geoffrey Champion, daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Colin Stanley Huxley, grand-daughter of the late Thomas and Jane Hall, (pioneers in the Warwick district in the time of the Leslie brothers), mother and mother-in-law of Dr and Mrs G. David Champion, Mr and Mrs Rod James (Sue) and Warwick and Rosemary Champion, (Longway, Longreach) and grandmother and great-grandmother of their families, sister and sister-in-law of the late Mr and Mrs Colin Beresford Huxley, and the late Major and Mrs Thomas Aubrey Huxley, cousin of Mr and Mrs Max Hall and family, dear aunt of Mrs Jill Doyle (nee Huxley)and Mrs Helen Hengstberger (nee Huxley), also many other relatives in the Warwick and Darling Downs district.
Aunt Margaret was born on September 15, 1911, at the Warwick District Hospital.
Margaret Jane were her grandmother's names and her maternal grandparents were from Aberdeen.
Thomas Hall, her maternal grandfather, wrote the book The Early History of Warwick District and Pioneers of the Darling Downs.
Her father, Colin Huxley, was descended from Thomas Huxley, third fleet convict and called Tom Ugly by local Aborigines around Sydney.
Thomas Huxley married Ann Forbes, first fleet convict Lorna, the name by which Margaret was known in younger days, grew up on a property called The Wattles, at Mt Sturt, 20km east of Warwick with her parents and her brothers Beres and Aubrey. …
