NEWS OF THE BOYS.
Messrs. W. Munro, L. Hanna, 'Billy'
Cloke, Jim Snelling and Leonard Royds
(Liverpool) report having received their
Xmas parcels sent them by Mr. Lloyd of
Rochdale, England, who forwarded them
to the boys in the trenches at the request
of Mrs. Ball, of George-street, Liverpool,
who generously sent a £5 note to him for
that purpose. Mr. Lloyd says: The Aus-
tralian boys have made such names for
themselves that the English folk worship
the ground they walk on.
Captain Erie-Vidal reports all well in
France. Rodney Learoyd, driving in the
ammunition column in France, has had
some narrow escapes. His horses, he says,
now know the bugle calls as well as the
men.

LIVERPOOL. WELCOME HOME. Another pleasant welcome home was tendered to Artificer T. H. Spittle (Motor Transport) and his wife on Saturday even- ing last at "Dorking Villa," George-street, Liverpool, when Mr. and Mrs. Ball enter- tained a large gathering of friends. Games provided great excitement; and an excel- lent programme was. rendered by Messrs. J. Kay, T. Fitzpatrick, F. Meehan, R. Park- inson, H. Woods J. Ball, L. Royds, Misses E. Bell and A. Smith. Mr. Fred Ball was the pianist. Refreshments were plentiful at the conclusion of the evening, and close on midnight the gay and happy guests formed a circle around Mr. end Mrs, Spittle and sang "For they are jolly good fellows" and "Aul Lang Syne."

A very enjoyable evening was passed. at Dorking Villa, George-street, on Mon-day, the: occasion being a surprise party given by about 40 friends to Mrs. J. Ball to celebrate her birthday. The evening was spent in singing and dancing. Mrs. McGlinn being at the piano. Mr. Frank Weekes was M .C . Mr.Hugh Watts' hum-orous songs caused much amusement, and other enjoyable items were rendered by Mrs .Weekes, Messrs. J. Kay, W. Smith, L. Royds, F. Weekes and R Woods. .Dur- ing a break in the proceedings refresh- ments were served. At midnight the happy company broke up after singing "Auld Lang Syne."

On Saturday evening last Mrs. James
Ball, of "Dorking Villa." George-street.
Liverpool, was seized with a stroke and
has been confined to her bed ever since.
Latest report is that she is improving.

CARNIVAL AT LIVERPOOL
LIVERPOOL, Wednesday
A most successful -carnival ln aid of the resuscitated Agrlcultural Society was held on Monday. The total proceods will be somethlng in the vicinity of £2« The competition for most popular local |ady was won by Mrs. Emily Ball, who received 4462 votes. Mrs. M. Adams was second with 2220 votes; Mrs. Heeger, 2014, Mrs Mat Gowan, 1808. The competition brought ln £130/18/6. There were about 60 entries in the baby show. In the various divisions the winning infants were:-Myra Jay (C io jj months), Nancy Norton (ti months and und«) Joan Coghlan (12 to l8 monthB), Julia Dumi (l8 months to 2 years).-Oa tbo coiinl» grounds a sports programme wns carried out Including cycle racing and military events. There was an attendance of upwards of It-» persons, making the carnival a record for Liverpool in that respect.
